Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) secretary general Francis Atwoli defended his famous “Washenzi” slur which some Murang’a leaders thought was directed at them.

The bullish trade unionist amid laughter noted that he is more Kikuyu than some Kikuyus. In fact, he told those the people, his first girlfriend and step-mother were Kikuyu women.

“Mimi ni mkikuyu kuliko wakikuyu wengine…do not incite the Kikuyu community; we want to support the president in eradicating corruption in Kenya.

My first girlfriend was a Kikuyu.. Do not incite Kenyans, My mother was the second wife of my  father and she is a Kikuyu,” he said.

He further noted that his words had been twisted to fit a certain context. He took up the matter with nominated Member of Parliament Maina Kamanda.

“I am very angry Maina Kamanda. People are twisting my words, really twisting my words,” he lamented.

He further criticized those against the fight against corruption, noting that he will condemn all those opposing President Uhuru Kenyatta’s initiative to end graft before his second term is over.

“Don’t incite the community. We want to support Uhuru in eradicating corruption. I can’t say that all Kikuyus are washenzi,” he said.

He called for a referendum to ensure that winner does not take all.

Atwoli also emphasized that the president is still a young man who is too young to retire, hence the need to change the constitution.

Addressing the members of Parliament present, he urged them to help scrap the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

“SRC was meant to advise not regulate,” he said.
