Three people were Saturday killed while another escaped death by a whisker after a quarry collapsed in Kimuri, Kirinyaga County. The quarry caved in at around 1pm as the workers were there excavating stones for construction. The victims include two women and a man, police said adding investigations into the same were ongoing. The US military has boosted the war on al Shabaab after they staged a high-level military operation at Magogoni Airfield in Lamu County. A multi-agency sting operation team led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) recovered 16 tonnes of illegally imported powder milk in the Eastleigh area, Nairobi. Kenya has banned imports of powdered milk from Uganda. The seized product is also said to have originated Uganda. It is however not clear when it arrived in Kenya. The team comprising officers from Kenya Dairy Board, police and Kenya Revenue Authority broke into the godown where the product was being repackaged. Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, has been found guilty in the Toshakhana case and has been sentenced to three years in jail. The PTI chairman was Saturday arrested from his Zaman Park house, his party said in a tweet. Mystery surrounds an incident in which a gang trailed and killed a man in a cybercafé in Siaya Town. The incident happened at the joint along Kenya Medical Training College-Siaya Stadium road, police said. Felix Okoth Yugi, 19 was trailed and shot by two unknown assailants at Sunrise Cybercafé, police and witnesses said. The gang had arrived on a motorcycle which they used in escaping after their mission was completed in the August 1 incident, police said. The government has pushed forward the date by which all non-approved payment platforms must be shut down and all users must switch to the designated Paybill number 222222. In a circular by Secretary to the Cabinet Mercy Wanjau, government agencies will be expected to adopt the new Paybill number by Tuesday, August 8. The deadline had earlier been set for August 10. Police in Moyale seized 500 kilograms of bhang and arrested one suspect in a stealth operation to curtail trafficking of narcotics in the region. The operation was launched after police received intelligence information that a lorry had been spotted at a thicket at Kate in Moyale while loaded with a suspicious consignment. Ethiopia’s federal government on Friday declared a “state of emergency” as violent clashes escalate between the national army and local fighters from the northern region of Amhara. “It has become necessary to declare a state of emergency as a situation has emerged where it has become difficult to control this unacceptable movement under current law,” the office of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said in a statement posted on social media. The Law Society of Kenya moved to court to challenge the constitutionality of the Finance Act 2023. The lawyers’ body also wants the government stopped from implementing it.
