The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has urged members of the public to take precautionary measures while shopping online during the festive season. The George Kinoti-led directorate said it has received numerous reports of people who have fallen victim to online scammers. The Court of Appeal has declined to suspend an order requiring members of parliament to refund Ksh2.7 billion that they illegally awarded themselves as house allowances. In a ruling delivered last year, the High Court had ordered the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) to recover the money in one year. However, the legislators lodged an appeal claiming the High Court misinterpreted the Constitution on the roles of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission viz a viz those of the PSC. Three Maranda High School students have been arrested following Sunday’s fire that razed a 630-capacity dormitory. According to the school’s Board of Management Chairperson Eng. Carey Orege the three students are in Form Two. They are helping with investigations on the suspected arson incident. The board resolved to close the school indefinitely after a crisis meeting on Sunday afternoon. The fire began at the Boaz Owino dormitory at around 11:30am. The dormitory housed Form One students. The wreckage of the ill-fated bus that plunged into Enziu River in Mwingi East area of Kitui County on Saturday has been retrieved. The number of people who perished in the tragedy rose to 33 after nine more bodies were retrieved from the river on Sunday. The body of a nine-month-old baby was among those retrieved. Efforts to pull the bus from the river took the whole day after the exercise was suspended following a heavy downpour on Saturday night. The operation was led by divers from the Kenya Navy. Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has given the clearest indication yet that he is contemplating defecting to Deputy President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party. A fire broke out at a dormitory at Maranda High School in Siaya County on Sunday morning, the latest of such incidents to be reported amid a wave of unrest in schools in many parts of the country. At least 23 people have been confirmed dead after a bus they were traveling in plunged into Enziu River in Mwingi East area of Kitui County on Saturday. Two Kenyans who recently petitioned the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to remove High Court Judge Said Juma Chitembwe have withdrawn the petition. Tongaren Member of Parliament Eseli Simiyu and his Kanduyi counterpart Wafula Wamunyinyi have announced their exit from Ford Kenya after a protracted row over the party’s leadership.
