A Nairobi court was on Wednesday thrown into confusion after claims that a Belgian woman believed to have been murdered in Nakuru is alive. The claims were made by lawyer Brian Khaemba who is representing Lucy Waithera, a suspect in the murder of Dysseleer Mirielle Lesoipa, alias Leila. A section of Nairobi’s Langata Road will be closed on Sunday, November 14, 2021, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced. In a notice on Wednesday, KeNHA Director General Eng. Only 1.5 million new voters were added to the register of Kenyans eligible to vote in the just-concluded National Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) kicked off the listing exercise on October 4. It was scheduled to close on November 2, however, the High Court in Eldoret extended it by a week. Six students, who were arrested on Monday in connection with a dormitory fire incident at Maranda High School, will remain in custody for 14 days. The students were arraigned before Bondo Resident Magistrate Stella Mathenge on Tuesday. The magistrate allowed police to hold the students until November 23 23, 2021, to give room for the completion of investigations into the suspected arson incident. The students had requested the court to release them on bond pending investigations into the incident. Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officers have confiscated $28,000 (Ksh3.1 million) concealed in a jacket shipped into Kenya as a parcel from South Carolina state, United States. In a statement on Tuesday, KRA said the money was discovered on Friday, November 5 by officers from Posta Parcel Office and KRA customs officers based at City Square Post Office. A Nairobi court has blocked the planned takeover of the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Kemsa) by the military amid mismanagement allegations. In orders issued on Monday, the Employment and Labour Relations Court also barred Kemsa from laying off over 900 workers in what the board described recently as a restructuring process. Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been dealt a blow in his bid to block the swearing-in of Ann Kananu as the city boss. The Supreme Court on Monday struck out Sonko’s petition arguing that it doesn’t have the jurisdiction to hear the matter. “The court, we conclude lacks jurisdiction to entertain the application,” part of the ruling read. The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has suspended the listing of defaulters of loans below Ksh5 million on Credit Reference Bureaus (CRBs) for a period of 12 months. In a statement to newsrooms on Monday, CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge said the directive applies to all those borrowers whose loans were performing previously, but have become non-performing from October 1, 2021. “Consequently, loans below Ksh.5 million that fall in arrears from October 1, 2021, to September 30, 2022, will not lead to the “blacklisting” of the borrower on the Credit Reference Bureaus (CRBs),” the statement reads. Two students are set to be arraigned in court on Monday over a dormitory fire that broke out at Buruburu Girls last week. It is alleged that the two girls planned and burnt one of the dormitory’s cubicles on Sunday, October 31 before escaping and leaving their colleagues behind. At least 59 students were admitted in hospital following the incident. Investigators established that the duo was heard planning to burn one of the cubicles. The Supreme Court of Kenya has allowed the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji to continue with extradition proceedings against former Finance Minister Chris Okemo and ex-Kenya Power boss Samuel Gichuru.
