Suspected Al Shabaab militants on Tuesday morning hijacked two cars believed to have been ferrying voters to their respective polling stations in Mandera county.
The cars were hijacked between Omar Jillo and Lafey.
The cars were identified as a Probox and a Land Cruiser by the North Eastern regional commissioner, Mohamud Saleh.

The extremist group did not take the passengers hostage nor kidnap them. Mohamud said the reports doing rounds on social media that a bus full of voters had been hijacked were untrue.
One of the vehicles had a South Sudan number plate.
“All polling stations, including those at the borders in Mandera, Wajir and Garissa, have opened and the exercise is going on smoothly. We don’t expect any hiccups,” he said.
The extremist group has not taken responsibility for the hijack.
