    Early Life

Doyle F. Brunson was born on August 10, 1933, in Longworth, Texas.

Growing up in a small farming community, Brunson excelled in athletics and became an All-State basketball player during high school. His talent earned him a scholarship to Hardin-Simmons University, where he continued playing basketball.

Brunson had aspirations of playing professionally and was reportedly being considered by the Minneapolis Lakers before a serious knee injury ended his basketball career. While recovering, he turned to poker as a pastime, unknowingly beginning a journey that would change the game forever.

    Poker Career

After graduating from college, Brunson briefly worked in sales. However, he realized he could earn more money playing poker than working a traditional job.

He soon became a full-time professional player, participating in underground poker games across Texas before eventually relocating to Las Vegas.

Over the following decades, Brunson established himself as one of the world’s greatest cash-game players, regularly competing in the highest-stakes games against poker’s biggest names.

His fearless playing style, deep understanding of strategy, and remarkable consistency earned him widespread respect throughout the poker community.

    World Series of Poker Success

Brunson achieved legendary status after winning back-to-back World Series of Poker Main Event championships in 1976 and 1977.

Both victories came with the now-famous 10-2 starting hand, which later became known as the “Doyle Brunson Hand.”

Throughout his remarkable career, Brunson won 10 WSOP bracelets, placing him among the most successful players in tournament history.

He also became one of only a handful of players to win both a World Poker Tour title and the prestigious WSOP Main Event, further cementing his legacy as one of poker’s all-time greats.

Beyond the poker table, Doyle Brunson played a major role in educating future generations of players.

In 1979, he published Super/System, widely regarded as one of the most influential poker strategy books ever written.

Often referred to as the “Bible of Poker,” the book introduced advanced concepts and professional strategies that helped shape modern poker theory.

He later followed it with Super/System 2 in 2004, updating many of the original concepts for a new generation of players.

    Retirement

Brunson announced his retirement from tournament poker during the 2018 World Series of Poker, bringing an end to one of the longest and most successful careers in the game’s history.

He had already been inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 1988, recognizing his enormous contribution to the sport.

Even after stepping away from competitive tournaments, Brunson remained one of poker’s most respected ambassadors, frequently appearing at major events and mentoring younger professionals.

    Personal Life

Doyle Brunson was married to Louise Brunson, and together they had two children.

Outside poker, he was known for his strong Christian faith, love of family, and generosity toward fellow players.

Despite battling cancer multiple times throughout his life, Brunson continued competing at the highest level for decades before passing away on May 14, 2023, at the age of 89.
