Police are investigating an incident where a a group of boda boda riders on Friday night torched a 33-seater minibus after it allegedly knocked and killed one of their colleagues near Mama Lucy Hospital in Embakasi Central, Nairobi.
Police said they plan to arrest all those involved. They want to use technology in tackling the menace. It is the latest in a series that have left up to five vehicles burnt down after fatal accidents.
The incident occurred along Kangundo Road when the minibus reportedly swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle, resulting in the collision.
The minibus plying the Eastern Bypass route hit and killed a rider on the spot.
Police identified him as Evans Mose.
The crash quickly drew the attention of nearby residents and boda boda operators, who confronted the minibus driver before the situation escalated.
According to witness footage, the mob set the vehicle ablaze, leaving it fully engulfed in flames as onlookers kept their distance.
The driver had by then escaped on foot fearing for his life.
The other riders also harassed other road users before police arrived at the scene minutes later.
The wreckage of the bus and motorcycle were moved to the local police station pending other procedures.
The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.
Nairobi police boss George Seda condemned the incident and termed it criminal. He said his team is pursuing the matter.
This is the latest such incident to happen in the past two months. Up to five vehicles have been burnt by the riders after fatal accidents.
The incidents happened in the city and along Thika Road. They all remain under probe, police said on Saturday.
There are calls to regulate the boda boda industry at large as part of efforts to address such incidents.
