Drama In Dagoretti As Youth Clash With Detectives In Drug Bust

Drama unfolded at Mutuini’s Ndonyo Market in Dagoretti Sub-County on Tuesday after a group of youth clashed with detectives during a drug raid that led to the recovery of a sack of suspected bhang.

The operation, led by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) enforcement team under the command of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nicholas Kosgei, targeted notorious drug and chang’aa hotspots in the area.

The crackdown began at 4:00 PM and involved 15 officers who were acting on intelligence.

The team first stormed four suspected chang’aa dens, but found them deserted, with no suspects or illicit brew at the scenes—raising suspicions that the operators had been tipped off.

The team then turned their attention to a well-known drug zone near a railway line, where they found a group of young men openly using narcotics.

As officers moved in to arrest the suspects, chaos broke out. The youth scattered into nearby shanties and open fields, abandoning a three-quarter sack of what is suspected to be cannabis.

While the officers managed to recover the stash, the operation took a tense turn when the youth regrouped and began throwing stones at the detectives and their vehicle.

No injuries were reported during the confrontation.

SSP Kosgei confirmed that the team withdrew strategically to avoid further escalation.

Speaking after the raid, he said the operation marked the beginning of a wider effort to root out drug dealers and brewers in Nairobi.

“We will not allow drug traffickers and illicit brewers to destroy our youth. This operation sends a strong message—we are watching, and we will strike without warning,” said Kosgei.

The recovered drugs were taken to the Jogoo Road Police Station exhibit store. A report on the incident has been filed at the Riruta Police Station.
