Emilio Nico Gay is an English cricketer born on 14 April 2000 in Bedford, Bedfordshire.
A left-handed opening batter who bowls occasional right-arm medium pace, he plays for Durham in domestic cricket and has represented the England Test team since 2026.
He previously featured for Northamptonshire and made T20 International appearances for Italy in 2025, qualifying through his maternal Italian heritage.
His father’s family originates from Grenada in the Caribbean, giving him eligibility for the West Indies as well, though he has prioritised England.
Educated at Bedford School, Gay developed a passion for the game during a childhood trip to the Caribbean around the 2007 World Cup, where he obtained a signed shirt from Dwayne Bravo.
Siblings
Emilio has a younger brother named Simeon Gay, who is approximately three years his junior.
Born around 2003, Simeon is a fine art graduate of Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London.
In their youth, Simeon was regarded as the more naturally gifted cricketer of the two.
He played as a batting all-rounder who bowled leg-spin and represented Bedfordshire at Under-14 level.
Both brothers attended Bedford School.
In July 2026 the pair lined up together for the Headmaster’s XI against the Leavers XI at the school and shared a partnership, with Simeon outscoring his older brother on that occasion.
Career
Gay progressed through Northamptonshire’s academy system from under-15 level and signed his first professional contract with the county in 2019.
He made his first-class debut that September against Gloucestershire, though weather delayed his first innings until the following season.

His maiden first-class century came in 2021 with 101 against Kent at Canterbury. He debuted in List A and T20 formats the same year.
A standout performance arrived in April 2024 when he scored 261 against Middlesex, the highest Championship score by a Northamptonshire batsman in matches between the two sides.
After declining a contract extension, he joined Durham on a three-year deal, initially on loan for the end of the 2024 season and permanently from 2025.
In his first full season at Durham he scored multiple centuries and more than a thousand first-class runs.
Internationally he played three T20Is for Italy in July 2025 during the Europe Regional Final of the T20 World Cup qualifiers, including a half-century against Scotland.
Injury later ruled him out of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
He featured for England Lions, including a tour of Australia.
Selected for England’s Test squad after a strong start to the 2026 County Championship, he made his Test debut on 4 June 2026 against New Zealand at Lord’s (cap 720), opening the batting.
By September 2026 he had played six Tests, scoring 271 runs with three half-centuries and a highest score of 60.
He has also appeared for Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League (though injury limited his involvement) and briefly in other competitions.
Accolades
Gay was named Northamptonshire Academy Player of the Year in 2018.
He has earned recognition as Rothesay County Championship Player of the Round, notably in April 2026 after a match-winning century in a record partnership for Durham against Lancashire.
His domestic form includes 13 first-class centuries, a career-best 261, and consistent high averages that led to England Lions selection and eventual Test recognition.
He contributed to Italy’s qualification for the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup and has served as an ambassador for initiatives such as Chance to Shine and the ACE Programme, aiming to broaden participation in cricket.
In 2026 he also joined the BBC commentary team for The Hundred.
