A move by a herder to throw a piece of wood while controlling his cows turned tragic when he fatally hit a 16-year-old girl who was near there in Chwele area, Bungoma County.
Police said the form two girl died in hospital where she had been admitted following the incident in Musese village on December 12, 2025.
The herdsman was arrested over the death and police said they are investigating murder.
He told police he was controlling his cows that had strayed into a maize plantation when he picked up a piece of wood and directed it towards one of the animals.
He however missed his target and hit the girl who was coincidentally in the maize plantation.
She screamed for help and collapsed before being taken to the hospital where she succumbed to the injury on December 13, police said.
Police visited the scene and recovered the piece of wood as part of investigations into the murder.
The body of the girl was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.
Elsewhere in Misikhu, Bungoma County, a man was stabbed and killed in a love triangle incident.
The deceased was identified as Joseph Wafula, 19. He was stabbed in the stomach and died in hospital following an altercation with another man over a woman on December 14, police said.
The deceased had set off from his Kibisi village to Kewa to meet his girlfriend when the incident happened.
Witnesses said he met the woman standing with another man. When he inquired why the two were meeting, the assailant reached out for a knife that he had and stabbed him in the left hip. He then escaped the scene as Wafula fell on the ground while bleeding.
Police said he was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed. The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.
Police said on Monday they were pursuing the suspect for grilling and possible arraignment for murder.
Murder cases have been on the rise amid efforts to solve them.
