Police in Nyamira County are investigating the suspected murder of a 17-year-old girl whose naked body was found behind her family home in Borabu Sub-County.
The girl identified as Margaret Ayieta was found lying dead in the compound at Kamkunji Village on Saturday afternoon by her mother, police said.
The mother said she had left her daughter at home at about 11am washing clothes before proceeding to Eronge Adventist Church.
When she returned, she found the lifeless body of the teenager lying behind the house.
Police officers visited the scene and found the girl’s naked body lying on its back, with visible injuries to the head and blood coming from her head and mouth.
Investigators recovered two items suspected to have been used as murder weapons—a jembe and a metal pipe.
Preliminary observations at the scene also raised suspicion that the teenager may have been sexually assaulted before her death.
The scene was photographed and processed by investigators as detectives began efforts to establish what happened and identify the person or people responsible.
The body was later removed and taken to Nyansiongo Mission Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending an autopsy to establish the cause and circumstances of her death.
Police have launched investigations into the suspected murder and possible sexual assault.
Meanwhile, eight months after the body of 25-year-old digital marketing manager Derrick Omanga Tom was found dumped near the Roysambu roundabout, detectives have made a significant breakthrough.
A 26-year-old man, Jared Kulo Oduor, was arrested Friday night in the Lakisummer area after months of surveillance.
He was detained at Muthaiga Police Station ahead of arraignment at the Makadara Law Courts on Monday.
The arrest is linked to the sale of Omanga’s missing phone.
Detectives say he is the man who sold Omanga’s phone six days after the young man vanished.
That phone had been sold to a third suspect, who was arrested earlier in Kangeta village, Meru County. The Meru suspect led investigators to Oduor.
Police are reviewing CCTV footage from the hours leading up to the killing to determine whether Oduor appears among those last seen with the victim.
Omanga, a digital marketing manager, disappeared on the evening of December 5, 2025, after a night out.
His body was discovered around 2 a.m. on December 6 near the Roysambu roundabout. Police initially treated the incident as a road accident. The family has always rejected that narrative.
A post-mortem established the cause of death as multiple injuries from blunt-force trauma, but did not conclusively state whether the injuries came from an accident or a deliberate attack.
CCTV from Wine Tails liquor store along Ngong Road captured Omanga’s final known movements.
At 10:37 p.m., he was seen headed upstairs holding a woman’s hand, followed closely by a man in a cap.
Later clips showed the man in the cap handing the woman a drink, Omanga checking his bag, and the group leaving.
Reports indicate the party later moved to a club along Thika Road. The woman allegedly felt unwell and left, while Omanga remained with the man in the cap.
Hours later, his body was found dumped by the roadside. His phone and laptop were missing.
For eight months, the family has demanded the arrest of everyone last seen with their son.
The phone trail, which went missing on the day he disappeared and was sold six days later, has led to two arrests and pointed investigators towards a possible third party.
Detectives say more arrests cannot be ruled out as phone data and CCTV analysis continue.
For now, another suspect is in custody, as the pressure for justice in the Derrick Omanga case intensifies.
