    Ugandans are not ready to be left behind. With input from the professionals from Makerere University and around Kampala, the company has activated for various tech events to attract next generation innovators. The last event was last weekend where Android Developers and enthusiasts met at Hive Collab and engaged on a marathon hacking mission, hackathon.

    The target was never CIA, Uganda police or any such servers. The hacking target was the many challenges in life whose solutions are not there or still involve many archaic methods. So the Android Developers were trying to convince the 17 plus attendees why their method should be the best on to solve the challenges.

    According to Richard Zulu, Lead Organiser Kampala GTUG, the following were some of the presentations;

    • Victor Miclovich: How to build an android up and introduction to the IDE environment (Eclipse)
    • Afimani Deogratious: Code walk-through of notepad tutorial to demonstrate Android UI patterns.
    • The attendees then demoed some of the apps they are working on for the Android Developer Challenge SSA
    • Some of them included Duke Daniel who demoed an android app that has a web component
    • Accelam Guy demoed two android apps he has worked on and ilustrated how attendees can use other libraries within Android
    • Another attendee demoed a game app he is working on with an interest in getting to know more about opengl ES, which led to a discussion on developing game apps for android

    On Saturday 11th June, the group embarked on mapping the Katanga Slum in Kampala. The main tools were the laptops, internet connection and the Google Map Maker. The aim here is to map the key amenities in slums for ease of access and awareness. Health clinics, water points, roads, shops among others were the main target according to Richard, GTUG Kampala Lead.
