Blood stains on a mattress can be stubborn and difficult to remove if not treated quickly. Since mattresses cannot be washed like regular fabric, using the right cleaning techniques is essential to prevent the stain from setting while keeping the mattress dry. Natural and household ingredients such as hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and cold water can effectively lift blood stains without damaging the material. Here is how to remove blood stains from mattress.

    Act Quickly for Best Results

The sooner a blood stain is treated, the easier it is to remove. Fresh stains are more likely to come out with minimal effort, while dried stains may require repeated treatments. Always use cold water, as warm or hot water can set the stain, making it harder to remove.

    Methods to Remove Blood Stains

    1. Cold Water Rinse for Fresh Stains

If the stain is still fresh, blot it with a clean cloth dampened with cold water. Gently dab the stain—do not rub, as this can push the blood deeper into the mattress fibers.

    1. Hydrogen Peroxide for Deep Cleaning

Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful stain remover that helps break down blood stains.

    • Pour a small amount of 3% hydrogen peroxide directly onto the stain
    • Let it bubble and sit for a few minutes, then blot with a clean cloth
    • Repeat if necessary, but avoid using excessive amounts to prevent mattress damage
    1. Baking Soda and Vinegar Paste

Baking soda and vinegar work together to lift tough stains and neutralize odors.

    • Mix 1 part baking soda with 2 parts cold water to form a paste
    • Apply the paste to the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes
    • Spray a small amount of white vinegar over the baking soda, then blot with a damp cloth
    • Allow the area to air dry completely
    1. Salt and Cold Water for Gentle Removal

Salt is a natural stain remover that absorbs moisture and helps lift stains.

    • Mix 2 tablespoons of salt with cold water to create a thick paste
    • Apply it to the stain and leave it for 15–20 minutes
    • Wipe away the residue with a damp cloth and allow the mattress to dry
    1. Enzyme-Based Cleaner for Stubborn Stains

If natural methods don’t fully remove the stain, use an enzyme-based stain remover designed for blood and protein stains.

    • Spray or apply the cleaner as directed on the label
    • Let it sit for the recommended time before blotting with a cloth
    • Ensure the area is completely dry before putting bedding back on

    Drying the Mattress Properly

After removing the stain, ensure the mattress dries completely to prevent mold and mildew:

    • Use a fan or open windows to speed up drying
    • Sprinkle baking soda over the cleaned area to absorb moisture, then vacuum it off
    • If possible, place the mattress in direct sunlight for natural disinfection

    Preventing Future Stains

    • Use a waterproof mattress protector to prevent liquids from seeping into the mattress
    • Treat stains immediately to prevent them from setting
    • Wash bedding regularly to maintain a clean sleep environment
