Remandees from Industrial Area Prison are complaining of the assault and discrimination that they receive from the prison police officers.
In June 2018, a prison officer, SP Wilson K. Tonui, is said to have assaulted a man named John Kibowen who died in one of the prison blocks in the presence of inmates. His remains, sources say were carried to a standby ambulance and ferried to City mortuary.
On 10 August 2018, the same SP Tonui reportedly assaulted a disabled man by the name Nicholas Bahati Mule in the capital Block. Nicholas, Kahawa Tungu has learnt, has since then been bedridden from the injuries.

Despite the assaults happening in front of other inmates who are willing to testify, SP Tonui threatened the inmates claiming that he is untouchable.
A source privy to the details says that Mr Tonui works under instructions from officer in charge by the name of Samuel Ruto.
The inmates complain that since the transfer of officer SP Tonui and Samuel Ruto to the prison, 18 inmates have died under mysterious circumstances.
One case of John kibowen was reported in all dailies on 26 July 2018, and the postmorterm report by Dr Oduor, was clear that the deceased was physically assaulted but the officers denied, telling the prisoners that the boy died at Kenyatta Hospital while undergoing treatment.

The inmates say that they are subjected to corporal punishment without lawful justification or otherwise for intimidation. They are worried that they may lose their lives if the ongoing treatment continues.
The inmates have written a letter to the Commissioner General of Prisons seeking to be heard.
They say that what they want is humane treatment: proper healthcare, proportionate diet, proper sewage system and equipment to clean their premises.
They also wish to be given fair treatment when it comes to communicating with their relatives and lawyers.
