Gor Mahia have parted ways with right full back/winger Innocent Wafula after failing to show up for contract negotiations.

Wafula’s current contract is ending in January next year but the Ugandan is yet to report for fresh talks, the club’s CEO, Lordvick Aduda, has said.

“Wafula is free to join a club of his choice. His contract will end in January and now that he is not available to negotiate for extension, we have no option.

We don’t have time to follow a player all the way to Busia. He should be the one keen to extend his stay that as a club we were very willing to negotiate,” Aduda told Goal.

Wafula joined the Kenyan champions in 2015 from Chemelil Sugar FC, helping them to win several domestic accolades, including that year’s KPL title which they won unbeaten.

However, his future at the club has constantly been up for speculations owing to the fact that he doesn’t own a passport.

With Gor Mahia’s focus now firmly on doing well in the CAF interclubs, Wafula has not been very helpful because he cannot be registered to play in the championships.

Efforts to help him acquire one has not been fruitful, with reports suggesting that the player is not keen to have one for reasons best known to him.

“We have tried our best to help him get a passport because he’s a quality player who can help the club at the continental level, but the mention of the word passport can make Wafula to disappear from training even for three months,” a source told Kahawa Tungu.

The situation has stalled his international career and made him miss offers to play for Uganda and Kenya.

In August, Kawowo.com linked Wafula with a move to Ugandan champions Vipers SC, who are also continental football.

The Venoms are said to have spotted and made him a top target during this year’s CECAFA Kagame Cup in a game they lost 2-1 to Gor Mahia in Tanzania.
