Military Service

In 1945, Coltrane enlisted in the U.S. Navy, partly to avoid being drafted into the Army during World War II. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor, where his musical abilities quickly gained attention. Coltrane joined the Navy swing band, the Melody Masters, where he played alto saxophone and made his earliest recordings in 1946.
