John Melendez has an estimated net worth of $500,000. The American radio personality, television announcer, writer, actor, musician and podcaster became famous as “Stuttering John” during his long association with The Howard Stern Show.

Melendez joined Howard Stern’s radio operation as an intern in 1988 before becoming one of its most recognizable on-air personalities. His celebrity interviews, often built around deliberately provocative or embarrassing questions, became a signature part of the program during the 1990s and early 2000s.

His career took a major financial turn in 2004 when he left Stern to become the announcer for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The move took him from a relatively modest radio salary to a six-figure television position.

After leaving NBC, Melendez returned to radio and comedy before establishing himself in podcasting and livestreaming.

    John Melendez Early Life

John Edward Melendez was born on October 4, 1965, in Massapequa, New York. He developed a stutter during childhood and has spoken publicly about being bullied because of his speech.

Melendez studied film and television at New York University. While at NYU, he became acquainted with comedian Mitch Fatel, who was working as an intern for Howard Stern.

When Fatel left the internship, he recommended Melendez as a replacement. Melendez joined The Howard Stern Show in 1988, initially performing basic production duties such as answering phones and screening callers.

His distinctive speech, personality and willingness to participate in unusual on-air situations eventually turned him into a regular part of the program.

John Melendez and The Howard Stern Show

Melendez’s profile grew when Stern began sending him to press conferences, movie premieres and other celebrity events.

Rather than conducting conventional interviews, Melendez would ask questions designed to embarrass, surprise or provoke his subjects. The unusual approach became one of Stern’s most recognizable comedy segments.

Over the years, Melendez interviewed celebrities, athletes, politicians and other public figures. Among those he encountered were Ally Sheedy, Ringo Starr, Chevy Chase, Ted Williams, Gennifer Flowers and the Dalai Lama.

As “Stuttering John” became increasingly recognizable, celebrities became more familiar with his interviewing style, sometimes requiring him to use disguises to get close enough to conduct his interviews.

Melendez eventually became more than a field correspondent. He participated in studio comedy segments, arguments and other recurring features on the show.

His radio exposure also created opportunities outside broadcasting.

    Music and Acting Career

Melendez signed a recording deal with Atlantic Records and released his self-titled album Stuttering John in 1994.

He followed it with Everybody’s Normal But Me in 1998.

His work also expanded into acting. He appeared in films including Airheads, Private Parts, Meet Wally Sparks, Dude, Where’s My Car? and Osmosis Jones.

He also made television appearances, including roles on Wings and Baywatch Nights. In 2003, he competed on ABC’s reality series I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!.

John Melendez Salary at Howard Stern

Despite the national attention he received from The Howard Stern Show, Melendez has said that his salary during much of his time at the program was relatively modest.

According to Melendez, he worked his first two years without a salary. He later said that he was paid $750 per week for two seasons when Stern’s television program aired on WWOR-TV.

He subsequently received an annual stipend from K-Rock, initially reported at $10,000 and later increased to $20,000.

By the end of his time with Stern, Melendez has said his annual salary had risen to approximately $75,000. He has also estimated that his average salary during his entire Stern run was around $35,000 per year.

His income was not limited to his radio salary. His popularity created additional opportunities in music, comedy, acting, television and personal appearances.

John Melendez Salary at The Tonight Show

Melendez’s biggest career-changing financial opportunity came in 2004.

NBC announced that he would leave The Howard Stern Show to become the announcer for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He made his debut on March 29, 2004, replacing longtime announcer Edd Hall.

The move generated controversy because Stern was unhappy that Leno’s team had recruited one of his employees.

For Melendez, however, the move represented a major increase in earning power.

Reports about his exact initial salary have varied. Melendez has described the position as paying approximately $500,000 per year, while other accounts have placed his initial compensation in the $350,000 to $400,000 range.

Regardless of the precise figure, the position paid several times more than his salary at Stern.

Melendez remained with Leno when The Tonight Show ended its first run in 2009. He subsequently worked as a writer and performer on The Jay Leno Show and later returned to The Tonight Show when Leno resumed hosting.

He remained associated with Leno until 2014.

The decade he spent working with Leno represented the highest-earning period of Melendez’s career.

    John Melendez Later Career

Following his departure from NBC, Melendez continued pursuing broadcasting and comedy.

He worked with The Stephanie Miller Show and continued making comedy appearances before shifting much of his attention toward independent broadcasting.

In 2018, he launched The Stuttering John Podcast. The program eventually expanded into discussions about politics, entertainment, radio and his experiences in the broadcasting industry.

That same year, Melendez published his memoir, Easy for You to Say, detailing aspects of his career and personal experiences.

In subsequent years, podcasting and livestreaming became major parts of his professional activities.

    John Melendez Controversies

Melendez has been involved in several highly publicized controversies throughout his career.

In 2001, gossip columnist A.J. Benza slapped Melendez during a confrontation on Stern’s program. The incident became a notable moment in the show’s history.

In 2018, Melendez attracted national attention after managing to reach then-President Donald Trump by posing as New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez.

Trump later spoke with Melendez while aboard Air Force One. The conversation included discussion of immigration and Trump’s upcoming Supreme Court nomination.

The White House subsequently acknowledged that a prank caller had managed to reach the president.

    John Melendez Lawsuits

Melendez has also been involved in legal disputes concerning his name, voice and recordings.

In 2020, he sued SiriusXM over its use of archival Howard Stern Show recordings featuring him. Melendez argued that the company had improperly exploited his name, likeness, voice and “Stuttering John” persona.

A federal judge dismissed the lawsuit in 2021. Melendez appealed, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit upheld the dismissal in 2022.

Melendez filed another lawsuit in New York in 2025 involving podcasters and media organizations, alleging unauthorized commercial use of his name, likeness, voice and persona.

In 2026, another legal dispute emerged when several podcast-related plaintiffs sued Melendez in federal court in Alabama. The complaint accused him of filing allegedly improper copyright takedown notices against YouTube videos featuring criticism or commentary about his broadcasts.

The legal disputes have added another chapter to Melendez’s long and often controversial career in media.

    John Melendez Personal Life

John Melendez married Suzanna Keller in 1997. The couple had three children before separating in 2011 and divorcing in 2012.

His financial circumstances changed considerably after his television career ended. During a 2016 child-support proceeding, a calculation used imputed monthly employment earnings of $1,731 for Melendez.

The figure was used for the support calculation and does not necessarily represent his total income from every source. However, it illustrates the significant difference between his post-NBC financial position and the six-figure compensation he received during his years working with Leno.

    John Melendez Real Estate

In 2005, Melendez and his then-wife paid approximately $2.57 million for a home in the Oaks of Calabasas community in California.

The approximately 6,500-square-foot property featured five bedrooms and six bathrooms and occupied roughly three-quarters of an acre.

The couple later placed the property on the market and eventually sold it in 2011 for approximately $2.73 million.

The home subsequently appreciated substantially. It reportedly sold again in 2025 for approximately $6.65 million, highlighting the significant increase in property values in the area after Melendez’s sale.

Melendez has also been associated with a three-bedroom property in Cape Coral, Florida.
