    Juliane Köhler is a distinguished German theatre, television, and film actress.

    Born on August 6, 1965, in Göttingen, Lower Saxony, West Germany, she grew up in a creative environment as the daughter of a puppeteer who ran a marionette theater and a primary school teacher.

    Köhler is widely recognized for her compelling performances in both classical stage roles and acclaimed international films.

    She stands out for her ability to portray complex emotional depth across diverse genres.

    Juliane has one sibling, a sister named Barbara Köhler.

    However, not much is known about Barbara as she lives a private life compared to her famous sister.

    Career

    Köhler trained at the Gmelin acting studio in Munich and later studied under Uta Hagen at HB Studio in New York City from 1985 to 1988, while also taking ballet lessons.

    She made her professional stage debut with a fixed engagement at the Niedersächsisches Staatstheater in Hanover in 1988.

    She went on to join ensembles at major venues including the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel in Munich (1993–1997 and again since 2001), the Münchner Kammerspiele, and the Residenztheater.

    Her theater repertoire spans classics by Shakespeare, Schiller, Racine, and modern works by authors like Botho Strauß and Yasmina Reza.

    On screen, her breakthrough came in the late 1990s with roles in Aimée & Jaguar (1999) and Pünktchen und Anton (1999).

    She gained international recognition for playing Jettel Redlich in the Oscar-winning Nowhere in Africa (2001) and Eva Braun in Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Downfall (2004).

    Other notable film credits include Two Lives (2012), A Woman in Berlin, and various international productions.

    On television, she has appeared in multiple Tatort episodes as psychologist Dr. Lydia Rosenberg and in series such as Toni, männlich, Hebamme and the 2024 family drama Haus aus Glas.

    She has also worked extensively as a voice actress in radio plays and audiobooks.

    Accolades

    For Aimée & Jaguar, Köhler won the Bavarian Film Award for Best Actress in 1998 and shared the Silver Bear for Best Actress with Maria Schrader at the 1999 Berlin International Film Festival.

    Her contributions to German cinema and theater have earned her consistent acclaim over decades.

    The film Two Lives, in which she starred, was selected as Germany’s official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards.
