Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu is in Nigeria ahead of their general elections as part of the election observer mission.

The county boss is among the 38-delegation, which serves under the American based National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Republic Institute (IRI), which is steered by former Botswana President Festus Mogae.

Following the nomination by the NDI and IRI, Ngilu is the only Kenyan politician in the high-powered delegation.

According to a statement issued by the Governor’s office, Ngilu was selected following her political career that has seen her rise to become the senior-most female political leader in the country, having served in various elective capacities.

“Governor Ngilu has been a public servant for more than 27 years, as Member of Parliament for Kitui Central Constituency for four consecutive terms, from 1992 to 2013, and as a Cabinet secretary in the national government of from 2002 to 2015,”the statement read.

The county boss left Kenya for Nigeria on Sunday, and on Wednesday (today), she is set to attend the ceremony for the signing of the National Peace Accord between the leading candidates – President Muhammadu Buharu and his main rival former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The signing, which will take place at the Abuja International Conference Center, seeks to have the candidates commit to accepting the outcome of the result that the Independent National Electoral Commission will announce.

Besides Governor Ngilu and the retired president of Botwana, other observers include; former Latvian President Vaira Vike Freiberga, former US Ambassador to Kenya Johnnie Carson who is currently a Senior Adviser at the United States Institute of Peace.

Former Gambian Vice President Fatoumata Tambajang, IRI Vice Chairman Randy Scheunemann and Derek Mitchell, the NDI’s third president are also in the team.

Nigeria’s pre-election political temperatures have been charged up following the suspension of Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen three weeks ago.

The CJ’s suspension triggered protests from opposition parties as he plays a vital role of settling election disputes.

Former US President Bill Clinton, who was expected to deliver the keynote address at Tuesday’s signing ceremony, but cancelled his trip to Nigeria at the last minute citing the charged political climate.

The elections are to take place on Sunday.
