The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has invited qualified teachers teaching at Senior School and Vocational Level to apply for online training in item writing.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, KNEC said the training will run from October 12 to October 30, 2026.

The training will focus on developing quality test items for Competency-Based Assessment.

KNEC said teachers who successfully complete the training will receive certification and may be engaged by the council in assessment-related activities when the need arises.

“Participants who successfully complete the training will be certified and may, from time to time, be engaged by KNEC in assessment – related activities, as need arises,” the notice reads.

Applicants must meet several requirements to qualify for the training.

KNEC said applicants must demonstrate unquestionable integrity and have an irreproachable professional record.

They must also be qualified professionals, experts or subject specialists in the subjects for which they wish to be trained.

Applicants must currently be teaching the subject they are applying for at either Senior School or Stage-Based Curriculum: Vocational Level.

They must hold relevant academic and professional qualifications in their subject or learning area and be conversant with the curriculum designs for their areas of specialisation.

Applicants must also have at least one year of teaching experience.

In addition, applicants must be registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and must be formally recommended by the head of their institution.

Interested teachers have been directed to submit their applications online through the KNEC examiners portal.

Applications should be submitted through https://examinersapp.knec.ac.ke and must reach KNEC on or before September 30, 2026.

Further information on the application process is available on the KNEC website at www.knec.ac.ke.

KNEC has cautioned teachers who have previously undergone its item-writing training against submitting applications.

“Teachers who have already been trained by KNEC in item writing are advised not to apply,” the council said.

Only shortlisted applicants will be notified.
