Luanda Member of Parliament Dick Maungu has been elected the new Chairperson of the National Assembly’s Public Investments Committee on Education and Governance (PIC-E&G), replacing Bumula MP Jack Wamboka who was recently removed from the influential oversight committee.
Maungu was elected unopposed during a committee sitting held on Thursday at the Parliament Buildings, following a nomination by Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje and secondment by Igembe Central MP Daniel Kariitho.
His election comes less than a month after Wamboka was suspended from chairing the committee following allegations of misconduct raised by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC). He was later reassigned to the National Cohesion and Equal Opportunities Committee.
Speaking after his election, Maungu expressed gratitude to committee members for the trust placed in him, pledging to lead with a focus on teamwork, accountability and transparency.
“I thank you for the confidence you have shown in me. I promise that together we shall work for the betterment of our country,” he said.
He further urged members of the committee to embrace collective responsibility in executing their oversight mandate, stressing the importance of unity in delivering on their work.
“We are one team and one people. We shall work together to ensure we achieve our objectives, while epitomising transparency in all our undertakings,” Maungu said.
The new chairperson also acknowledged the heavy workload facing the committee, noting that members would need to intensify their efforts to clear a significant backlog of reports and audit queries before the end of the year.
“We have a huge volume of work before us. We shall develop a clear plan to navigate the backlog and ensure we remain available to discharge our duties effectively,” he added.
Members of the committee who spoke during the sitting expressed confidence in Maungu’s leadership, calling for greater cohesion, efficiency and renewed focus in the committee’s oversight role.
