Lucille Ball was an American actress, comedian, producer, model, and businesswoman who had a net worth of $60 million at the time of her death in 1989. Adjusted for inflation, that fortune would be worth approximately $125 million today.

Best remembered as the star and co-creator of the iconic sitcom I Love Lucy, Ball also transformed television behind the scenes. As the head of Desilu Productions, she became one of Hollywood’s first major female studio executives, helping launch hit series including Star Trek and Mission: Impossible.

    Early life

Lucille Ball was born on August 6, 1911, in Jamestown, New York.

Her childhood was marked by hardship after her father died from typhoid fever when she was only three years old. She later lived with her strict grandparents and discovered a passion for acting during her early teens.

Ball studied at the John Murray Anderson School for the Dramatic Arts in New York before pursuing opportunities on stage and eventually in Hollywood.

    Early acting career

After recovering from a lengthy illness caused by rheumatic fever, Ball resumed her acting career in New York before relocating permanently to Hollywood in the early 1930s.

She initially worked as a model and chorus performer before landing small film roles. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, she appeared in numerous movies for major studios, earning the nickname “Queen of the B Movies.”

Her growing success in radio, particularly through the CBS comedy My Favorite Husband, paved the way for television stardom.

    I Love Lucy changed television

Lucille Ball’s biggest breakthrough came in 1951 with the launch of I Love Lucy, which she starred in alongside her husband, Desi Arnaz.

The sitcom became one of television’s greatest successes, running for six seasons and 180 episodes. It topped U.S. television ratings for four seasons and remains one of the most influential sitcoms ever produced.

The show’s popularity established Ball as one of America’s most recognizable entertainers while introducing production techniques that are still widely used today, including filming before a live studio audience with multiple cameras.

    Desilu Productions

In 1950, Ball and Arnaz founded Desilu Productions, initially to produce their television projects.

One of the company’s smartest business decisions was securing ownership of the original I Love Lucy film prints and syndication rights. That move proved enormously valuable as reruns became a global success.

    Major financial milestones included:

    • In 1957, CBS purchased the rights to I Love Lucy episodes for $4.5 million, equivalent to roughly $40 million today.
    • The proceeds helped Desilu acquire the former RKO Studios lot for $6 million.
    • Ball bought Arnaz’s ownership stake after their divorce in 1962 for $2.5 million.
    • Under her leadership, Desilu produced major television hits including:
      • The Untouchables
      • The Dick Van Dyke Show
      • The Andy Griffith Show
      • Mission: Impossible
      • Star Trek
    • In 1967, Ball sold Desilu to Gulf+Western for $17 million, equivalent to approximately $130 million today.

Her leadership made her one of the first women to successfully run a major television production studio.

    Later television career

Following I Love Lucy, Ball remained a television favorite through two additional successful sitcoms.

    She starred in:

    • The Lucy Show (1962–1968)
    • Here’s Lucy (1968–1974)

Here’s Lucy also featured her children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr.

Although her final sitcom, Life with Lucy (1986), lasted only a short time, Ball’s influence on television comedy remained unmatched.

    Personal life

Lucille Ball married Desi Arnaz in 1940 after the pair met while working on the musical Too Many Girls.

    They had two children:

    • Lucie Arnaz
    • Desi Arnaz Jr.

The couple divorced in 1960 but maintained a close friendship for the rest of Arnaz’s life.

In 1961, Ball married comedian Gary Morton, and they remained together until her death.

    Death

Lucille Ball died on April 26, 1989, at the age of 77.

She passed away from a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm shortly after undergoing heart surgery. Just weeks earlier, she had received a standing ovation during her final public appearance at the Academy Awards.
