Police in Rangwe, Homa Bay County, arrested a 27-year-old man over the death of his wife, who allegedly succumbed to injuries sustained during a domestic assault.

The case was reported on Sunday by the mother of the deceased, Eunice Gesare Monantia, 24. Gesare had repeatedly informed her mother that she was being physically assaulted by her husband, a resident of Nyangweso Village in East Kochia Location.

The woman had called a relative seeking urgent medical assistance after allegedly being assaulted by her husband. The relative travelled from Kisii and found her daughter in severe pain and unable to sit properly.

She took her to Gusii Hospital for treatment before she was referred the following day to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialised care. However, she died a day later while undergoing treatment.

Her body is being preserved at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.

Following the report, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Rangwe visited the mortuary and commenced investigations. Police said no visible external injuries were observed during the initial examination of the body.

The suspect later surrendered himself at Rangwe Police Station after learning that police were looking for him in connection with the death. He was immediately arrested and placed in custody pending his arraignment in court to obtain custodial orders as investigations continue.

Police said the post-mortem examination will be crucial in establishing the exact cause of death and determining the appropriate charges.

Such domestic deaths have been on the rise amid a campaign to address them. Police say most cases remain unsolved and under active investigations.

The incidents affect both men and women and there is a campaign to address the same.
