Interior CS, Fred Matiang’i ordered for lawyer Miguna Miguna to remain in police custody as the government made arrangements for his deportation, Kahawa Tungu has learnt.

In a letter dated February 6, the CS says that his directive is indeed ‘sufficient warrant’ to keep the NRM general in police custody.

Judge Luka Kimaru had earlier on in the day ordered for the immediate release of Miguna and that he be presented before him today (Wednesday).

The international lawyer, was moved from Kajiado law courts and instead of appearing before Judge Kimaru, was held at the ICD Police deport in Industrial area and later to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport where he was forced into a KLM flight departing Nairobi for Amsterdam.

But the lawyer was later deported to Canada, ‘his country of origin’ as his presence in the country was ‘contrary to national interest.’

“Miguna is headed home. The court ordered he gets released and Interior Ministry obeyed the orders and even assisted him with a flight ticket home. Please note he renewed his Canadian Passport on 16th June 2017,” the official government newsroom said on Twitter.

The Immigration Department argues that he renounced his Kenyan citizenship, something that he has denied.

“I have never, ever renounced my Kenyan citizenship and will never do that. I’ve never even contemplated it,” he has said.
