Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Commerce, and Industry Moses Kuria has declared that he will assist the owner of the troubled China Square to establish a manufacturing plant in Kenya.

Kuria on Saturday said that the investor will subsequently collaborate with Kenyan traders.

“I will assist China Square Owner Mr Cheng to set up a manufacturing plant in Kenya and work on a distribution partnership with Gikomba, Nyamakima, Eastleigh, Kamukunji, Muthurwa and River Road Traders,” tweeted the CS.

This comes a day after the trade CS criticized the “Chinese investor” for conducting business within the Unicity mall, which is owned by Kenyatta University.

“I’ve today given an offer to Prof. Wainaina the VC Kenyatta Uni to buy out the lease for China Square, Unicity Mall & hand it over to the Gikomba, Nyamakima, Muthurwa &  Eastleigh Traders Association. We welcome Chinese investors to Kenya as manufacturers, not traders,” said Kuria.

Kuria blamed former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, raising the issue of why he authorized the Chinese dealers to work locally while he was in office.

China Square, which has recently seen a massive influx of purchasers, announced its temporary shutdown on Sunday as a result of the dispute.

China Square informed its clients on Saturday that they will be closed on Sunday in order to re-evaluate and replan their corporate strategy, in order to better serve their consumers and meet their needs.

“We regret to inform you that China Square Limited will be temporarily closed on Sunday, February 26, 2023,” the statement read in part.

“Our commitment to providing you with the highest level of service remains as strong as ever, and we look forward to re-opening on Monday, February 27, with a renewed focus on meeting your expectations.”
