Kenya Urban Authority (Kura) has announced that the launch date of a their new smart traffic control system for Nairobi will took place in two years.

The Sh1.88 billion project once constructed will help ease congestion along main roads inside the city.

Kura together with Nairobi City County, National Transport and Safety Authority, and Transport Ministry have worked together to construct the project dubbed The Nairobi Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) project.

Kura acting director-general Silas Kinoti says the project will introduces a more networked approach that will reduce the number of traffic officers.

“This system is different in that two junctions can talk to each other because this has taken a network approach. One junction can even block traffic depending on what is happening on the other junction controlled from a traffic management centre,” Kinoti said.

“The information will be relayed directly from the cameras to traffic control centre and the system itself has its own artificial intelligence.”

According to reports a draft has already been developed and construction is set to begin at the end of the year.

Schlothauer & Wauer and UK’s Wyg International won secured the consultancy deal for the project at the beginning of the year.

“Construction will probably be starting towards the end of next year … and if things go well, even by the middle of 2019, you may see the first junction coming online,” Wyg director John Pattinson said.
