Deputy President William Ruto has said that farmers will be paid KSh2.1 billion for their supplies to the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) from next week.

Speaking during the memorial service of Bishop Cornelius Korir at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Uasin Gishu County, DP Ruto said that the government had set aside money which will be ready by next week.

The money will be paid to farmers who have been waiting since last year after supplying maize to NCPB.

DP Ruto said that farmers can start selling the maize being harvested to NCPB, as they have been directed to start buying.

He says NCPB has been directed to inform farmers how their produce will be purchased and the amount it will be bought at.

“We have directed NCPB to formally communicate to maize farmers on how they are going to purchase their produce being harvested now and at what price. This will only benefit local farmers and not brokers, businessmen or merchants,” the DP said.

The EACC had earlier cleared 90 individuals who supplied maize to NCPB last year, from the maize scandal. They will also receive remaining payment for their supplies.

62 individuals are still being investigated.

DP Ruto said that NCPB will only deal with local farmers directly.
