Orange Kenya wants you to “Jienjoy na Mbao”

Just as we promised you yesterday, Orange Kenya seems to be entering the local price war ring. The company has launched a new promotional tariff called Jienjoy na Mbao which is set to last for 60 days (2 months).

Through the new bundle, Orange Mobile customers will enjoy a daily 200 minutes on-net calls, 100 on-net SMS and 10MB of data at a cost of only Shs. 20 per day.

Telkom CEO says that teh prmotion targets the user who is more focused on calls and sms and not much intensive on data as you can see data allocation is 10mb. This promotion fits the small trader and kadogo shop operator who will be less on facebook and twitter but more on sms and short calls.

Mickael Ghossein said the offer was informed by the telecommunications company’s extensive research on dynamic customer needs and preferences. Orange will be rewarding loyalty and meet other clients needs. The promotion will not see the end of the Ksh 100 per month promotion.

“National economic statistics show that more than half of the population currently lives on less than a dollar a day. Imperatively, these people are still excluded from the telecommunication options that are available, meaning that they miss out on mobile banking, mobile money transfer and other benefits that result from the penetration of mobile phones in the local market” he said.

Mr Ghossein says that Orange focuses on value, innovation and the client more than anything else. I pushed CEO Ghossein to give us more reason why they are focusing on the saturated SMS and voice markets. Ghossein say that they will be giving us more data if we really need data and just that the research by Orange has pointed them to the fact that we might not need as much data because there isn’t much content.

CEO Ghossein also talked of the challenges in the market like when the operators are trying to be unique then they are being misunderstood. Mr Ghossein also talked of his fears that the Kenyan telecoms market might get very much muddled with low tariffs which returns no value to the investor and kills the market.

Orange currently shares 40% of its network with other operators and currently has close to 2.5 Million clients.

Ghossein said the on net offer is available to all pre-paid customers and will cost the customer only Kshs 20 bob, and can be activated by simply   dialing *20# from their handsets, and will be applicable for a period of 24 hours from the time of activation.

Currently, Orange boasts that it has the most affordable voice tariff that allows its over two million Orange Mobile customers to make unlimited calls between 10am to 5pm daily for a monthly flat fee of Ksh 100.

Orange also has new Head of Marketing and Strategy, Ms Florence Sironge.
