More than 39,000 students across Somalia sat for the 12th Grade National Examination for the 2024–2025 academic year, according to the Federal Ministry of Education, Culture, and Higher Education.

The ministry said the exams were held between June 14 and June 19, with a total of 39,382 candidates participating — 42% of them girls (16,356) and 58% boys (23,026). The students sat the exams in all federal member states and the Banadir region.

Banadir recorded the highest number of candidates at 23,674, followed by Southwest with 5,904, Galmudug (3,223), Hirshabelle (2,974), Jubaland (2,097), and Khatumo (1,520).

The exams were conducted in 140 certified centres — 76 in regional states and 64 in Banadir — under tight supervision and security. To ensure fairness and smooth coordination, the ministry deployed 2,908 invigilators, 323 supervisors, and 1,777 security personnel.

The ministry also introduced several improvements this year, including QR code technology for exam verification, deployment of qualified national-level teachers, and better distribution of students to avoid overcrowding. On-site health services and real-time online attendance tracking were also used to enhance management.

For the first time, the ministry introduced 12th Grade exams for agricultural students, a move aimed at diversifying learning paths and supporting the country’s agricultural sector.

Education Minister Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir praised the students and all stakeholders for the successful exercise.

“I commend our students for their dedication and perseverance. I thank teachers, parents, exam staff, security personnel, and all partners for ensuring this national undertaking was conducted smoothly and credibly. Together, we are building trust in our education system and investing in a brighter future for our youth,” he said.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to improving the quality of national exams and expanding access to quality education for all Somali children.
