Senate majority leader Kipchumba Murkomen has said that the referendum will not happen in the next four or five years. He said that the proponents of the referendum were trying to divert attention from the main issues.
He said there were many proposals and therefore it would take a long time to agree on what the Referendum will be about. Murkomen who is openly opposed to the call for a referendum said that a change in the constitution would not ensure ethnic inclusivity or employment.
The senate Majority leader said that the reaction on the ground that are fueling the call for a referendum are a knee jack reaction to the economic challenges that Kenyans have facing economically.
Murkomen also said that although he agrees that there are issues which ought to be amended but the issues should be amended when there is a consensus. He however reiterated that if the proponents of the referendum met the requirements no one including him could stop it.
