Senator Hamida Kibwana has raised concern over the poor housing conditions faced by forest rangers working under the Kenya Forest Service (KFS).
She is seeking answers from the Senate Committee on Land, Environment, and Natural Resources about what she describes as deplorable living conditions for the rangers.
“Forest rangers play a vital role in protecting our forests, which are crucial for biodiversity, water catchment, climate control, and the livelihoods of millions of Kenyans. Despite this, their welfare, especially housing, has been severely neglected,” Senator Kibwana told the Senate.
She explained that many rangers live in unsafe and unsanitary conditions, lacking even the most basic facilities.
Some are forced to live in makeshift shelters or tents near forest outposts, exposing them to harsh weather and insecurity.
The Senator stressed that investing in proper housing for rangers is not just about their comfort—it is a national and environmental security issue.
“Supporting forest conservation starts with supporting the people who protect our forests,” she said.
In her request to the Senate Committee, Senator Kibwana wants a full report on the current state of housing for forest rangers at all KFS stations and outposts across the country.
She also wants the Committee to explain what steps KFS has taken to assess, maintain, or upgrade these facilities.
Additionally, she is asking the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry to reveal any plans to invest in safe and sustainable housing for rangers.
This includes exploring public-private partnerships and sharing the expected timelines for implementing such improvements.
Senator Kibwana is also demanding details on budget allocations and policy frameworks put in place to support the long-term welfare of forest rangers, especially regarding their living conditions.
