Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) recorded an operating profit of Sh3.2 billion in the 2025/26 financial year, marking a significant improvement in the performance of the railway.
Kenya Railways Corporation Managing Director Philip Mainga attributed the profit to increased cargo volumes, improved operational efficiency, faster clearance of freight at the Port of Mombasa and stronger engagement with customers.
Speaking to the Business Daily on Wednesday, Mainga said freight volumes transported through the Chinese-built railway reached a record 8.2 million tonnes during the financial year.
The volume increased from 7.04 million tonnes recorded in the previous financial year.
The increase in cargo volumes generated $168.4 million (about Sh21.7 billion) in revenue, further strengthening the SGR’s contribution to Kenya’s transport sector.
The growth in freight traffic came alongside an increase in passenger numbers.
Data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shows that the number of passengers using the SGR rose to 2.73 million in 2025, up from 2.44 million in 2024.
Mainga said the improved financial performance was also supported by operational measures aimed at making freight movement more efficient.
Faster clearance of cargo at the Port of Mombasa has helped improve the movement of goods from the port to destinations along the SGR network.
