Standard gauge railway (SGR) workers have threatened to down their tools due to delayed July salaries and lack of legal contracts.

While protesting at the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) offices in Syokimau, the workers said that they will down their tool next week if no action is taken.

In their defense the CRBC said the delay was due to the refurbishment of their salary payment system and reviewing of the employees’ account details for recently hired staff.

They are apparently debugging the information as the current system was purely manual and therefore takes more time.

However CRBC said that he salaries were wired  to the employees account on Wednesday but as of Thursday evening the workers had still not received their pay.

The workers said that the lack of contracts makes them vulnerable as the they could not seek legal redress.
