6 Solai Patel Dam suspects will remain in remand at the Naivasha GK Prison over the weekend pending their bail/bond ruling on July 9, 2018.

The suspects alongside the dam owner Perry Mansukh pleaded not guilty to manslaughter, manslaughter, neglect of duty and failure to prepare environmental assessment reports charges.

Three more suspects Winnie Muthoni (Water Rights Officer), Tomkin Odhiambo (Regional Manager WRA) and Jacinta Were (Asst. Technical Operator WRA) also appeared at the Naivasha Law Courts.

Three more suspects, the prosecution noted are yet to appear before the court while opposing the release on bail/bond of the 9 suspects citing witness interference and being a flight risk.

According to investigations by the DCI, the dam was constructed by unqualified staff who used farm equipment, hence the flawed designs.

The victims have also said the dam owners paid them Sh. 100,000 for lives lost, Sh.200,000 for loss of semi permanent structures and Sh.1 million for permanent structures lost.

They are now crying foul as they claim that they were forced to sign the forms whose content they did not read.

“I signed without reading because there was no time. We were picking sh 50000 from the National kitty when we were told to sign for the money from the farm owners,” Joseph Gathogo a victim who lost his four children told a local daily.
