Police arrested three suspects who were found with over 20 kilos of meat suspected to have originated from a killed giraffe in Wajir Town.
The animal is believed to have been killed at nearby game reserves, police and Kenya Wildlife Service officials said.
The meat had been shared among the three suspects when the officials staged a raid in Bulla Kalkacha behind the local stadium.
The suspects are in custody pending arraignment in court. The game meat was retained as evidence.
Officials have been battling with poaching in the area amid increased incidents.
In May 2023, two suspected poachers were shot and killed and more than 70 kilos of giraffe meat recovered from them in a shootout in the area.
KWS rangers said they received information some people were supplying suspected giraffe game meat at Barwago location using a saloon car.
Police said the rangers confronted the poachers at Kalkacha sub-location prompting a shootout.
Two men believed to be poachers both aged 27 were fatally injured, while the third suspect who was armed with an AK-47 rifle, managed to escape, police said.
Police who visited the scene said they recovered 10 spent cartridges of 5.56×45mm, two spent cartridges, giraffe meat approximately 70 kilos packed in black polythene paper of approximately six kilos each all placed in a big plastic basin.
The team also recovered three mobile phones and the vehicle the men were using.
Officials say they have intensified war on poachers who are targeting wild animals in the area.
The poaching menace has led to the reduction of giraffes with conservationists calling for more actions to address the menace.
Locals have formed groups to make conservancies as part of efforts to contain the issue amid increased cases.
KWS officials say they are putting in place measures to address it.
