Two miners drowned in a tunnel they were digging for gold in Awendo, Migori County, police said.

This followed heavy rains that were experienced in the area and which filled the hole they were working on in Sigira area.

Police said David Odhiambo, 35 and Victor Otieno, 37 were in the gold mining tunnel when it started to rain. They did not know it was raining and flood water was filing in.

It was then that flood water drained into the hole drowning the two.

The bodies were removed and moved to the mortuary pending other procedures.

Cases of deaths in gold mining sites have been on the rise amid efforts to ensure safety of miners. At least three miners die in gold mining sites weekly in a worrying trend.

Officials complain the miners never listen to their advise against venturing into the tunnels which are now death traps.

The government established a police unit to focus on the issue of mining. There has been resistance from the cartels in the industry and who are exploiting the miners.

Elsewhere in old ferry beach in Kilifi County, a decomposed body of a man was recovered after suspected drowning.

The body had no visible injuries when it was discovered on February 21.

Police said they moved the body to the mortuary pending an identification and autopsy.

In Kongoni, Lake Naivasha, a search and rescue team managed to retrieve the body of a 17-year-old boy who had drowned in the waters. He was among three fishermen who drowned in the area, police said.

The search for at least two other missing people continued Saturday and Sunday, police said.

Three fishermen drowned after their boat capsized on Friday following heavy winds in the area, officials said. The boat the group was using capsized.

A fourth fisherman was saved by a life jacket that he had. This prompted the search for the victims.
