    Two more people killed in new landslide incident in Elgeyo Marakwet

    Two more people were killed on Monday morning in a fresh landslide incident that was reported in Ambach area, Keiyo, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

    This increased to 28, the number of those killed in the area since Friday, October 31, 2025, when the landslide incident happened, police said.

    Police said the fresh incident happened in Kibendo sublocation, Kipkenda village, following heavy rains.

    A survivor told police he heard a loud bang and found a huge stone had crushed his kitchen and store.

    Police and other rescue teams rushed to the scene and established that the stone originated from an escarpment there and killed two people.

    A third person, a minor, was rescued and rushed to the hospital.

    During the incident three goats were also crushed to death and one cow suffered broken limbs, police said adding the bodies of the deceased were moved to the mortuary pending other procedures.

    Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has been leading teams rescuing people earlier on affected by the landslide last Friday.

    He said at least 25 people remain unaccounted for while 26 are in hospitals.

    “Search and rescue efforts are ongoing, with the death toll now standing at 26 following the recovery of more bodies today. 25 people are still unaccounted for, while 26 are hospitalized,” he said

    Endo Ward bore the brunt of the tragedy, with 19 of the dead hailing from the place, he said adding Embobut/Embolot Ward lost five people, while Sambirir Ward lost two.

    He said major roads were destroyed in the incident even as he urged locals to avoid the place for now.

    He added Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, is fast-tracking the release of emergency funds to restore roads damaged in the landslide, while his Energy counterpart, Opiyo Wandayi, will deploy a team to restore electricity.

    The military and police helicopters will remain in the area to handle any emergency, he added revealing about 15 schools are inaccessible.

    The Kenya National Examination Council had made arrangements to airlift examination papers to the affected institutions.

    Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs in the affected Wards are continuing to sensitize people to move to safer grounds while the CS for Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes Geoffrey Kiringa Ruku, will continue to spearhead the provision of humanitarian support in the area in conjunction with the County Government of Elgeyo-Marakwet.

    He added the government will foot hospital bills and funeral costs, and support the people to rebuild their lives.
    Murkomen was with Ruku, Governors Wisley Rotich ( Elgeyo-Marakwet), Stephen Sang (Nandi) and Jonathan Bii (Uasin Gishu), MPs Kangogo Bowen (Marakwet East) and Adams Kipsanai (Keiyo North) and PS for Special Programmes Ismail Maalim, among other leaders and senior government officials.
