The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the interdiction and arrest of two police officers involved in the shooting of an unarmed civilian during Tuesday’s protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District.

The officers, identified as Police Constable Klinzy Barasa Masinde and Police Constable Duncan Kiprono, are currently in custody and being processed by the Homicide Team at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters.

The NPS has indicated that further action is pending as investigations proceed.

The victim of the shooting, Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, is admitted at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) following successful surgery to remove a bullet lodged in his head.

KNH earlier reported that Kariuki, a trader operating within the CBD, had arrived at the hospital critically injured and was placed on life support before undergoing a two-hour surgical procedure.

In a statement, the NPS condemned the incident as “unjustified” and expressed its regret over the matter.

“We deeply regret this unjustified act and commiserate with the victim and his family, while reaffirming our full commitment to ensuring justice is served,” said Muchiri Nyaga, Director of Corporate Communication and NPS Spokesperson.

The shooting, which occurred amid public unrest in the capital, sparked widespread concern over the use of force by law enforcement during protests. Authorities have since pledged transparency and accountability in handling the case.
