Police in Mombasa arrested two suspects and recovered a stolen firearm following a targeted security operation in Jomvu Sub-County.
The early morning operation, conducted on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, involved multi-agency teams acting on intelligence linked to a firearm reported stolen from a police officer in Maganda on March 14.
Police traced the first suspect to his residence in the Bangladesh area, and upon being ordered to open the door, the suspect allegedly attempted to flee through the back exit, prompting officers to shoot him in the left thigh.
While injured, the suspect reportedly led officers to a second location in the Narcol area where another suspect was found.
A search at the premises led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, loaded with 30 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.
Police confirmed that the weapon had been stolen from a police officer during an earlier incident reported at Maganda Police Station.
Both suspects were taken to Mikindani Hospital for treatment and are currently in police custody.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, with security teams pursuing additional suspects believed to be linked to the firearm theft.
Police have vowed to intensify operations in the area as part of efforts to curb illegal firearms and related criminal activities.
Meanwhile, police in Mombasa are investigating an incident in which unknown suspects broke into a vehicle and stole over Sh600,000 in cash.
Police said the incident occurred on March 16, 2026. The complainant reported that earlier in the day at around 1:00 p.m., he had withdrawn Sh646,120 from Standard Chartered Bank located at Treasury Square.
He then placed the cash on the back passenger seat of his Toyota Succeed and drove to the Baluchi Mosque near Makadara Grounds, where he parked before proceeding for prayers.
Upon returning after prayers, he discovered that his vehicle had been broken into after the driver’s door lock was tampered with. The entire amount of money had been stolen. Police visited the scene and announced investigations had been launched.
Police have advised motorists to exercise caution and avoid leaving large sums of money or valuables unattended in vehicles.
