    Adam Arkin was born on August 19, 1956, in Brooklyn, New York City. He is the son of actor, director, and writer Alan Arkin and Jeremy Yaffe. Raised in a Jewish household, Arkin was exposed to the arts from an early age. As a child, he performed with his parents in the children’s music group The Baby Sitters.

    He attended Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, New York, where he began pursuing acting more seriously.

    Early Acting Roles

    Arkin began acting in films while still in high school. He appeared in The Monitors (1969) and the short film People Soup. In the early 1970s, he took on roles in Made for Each Other and several television films, including Moe and Joe and It Couldn’t Happen to a Nicer Guy.

    At age 19, he guest-starred on the hit series Happy Days and also appeared on Barney Miller. His first leading television role came in 1977 when he starred as Lenny Markowitz in Busting Loose, appearing in 21 episodes.

    Rise to Prominence

    Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, Arkin appeared in films such as Baby Blue Marine, Under the Rainbow, and Full Moon High. He also had television roles in series including:

    • St. Elsewhere
    • L.A. Law
    • The Twilight Zone

    From 1987 to 1988, he played Jim Eisenberg in A Year in the Life, and later appeared in Knots Landing.

    In 1990, he joined the cast of Northern Exposure, earning a Viewers for Quality Television Award and a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.

    In 1997, Arkin purchased a home in the Coldwater Canyon neighborhood of Studio City, California, for $740,000. He listed the property for sale in June 2022 for $2.35 million. The home later went under contract in early 2023 after the price was reduced to $2.2 million.
