A 12-year-old Grade Six pupil died after falling into a soft sewer pit in Nyali, Mombasa County, while returning home from tuition classes.

The pupil at Maweni Primary School, had left his home in the Sineno area of Nyali on Monday morning and attended tuition at the school.

The bus was parking the vehicle when it accidentally pushed the top surface of the sewer structure.

At the time the child was reportedly alone on the soft surface. The impact caused the ground to cave in, sending him into the sewer drainage.

An emergency rescue team comprising personnel from the Mombasa Fire Brigade and the Kenya Red Cross was called to the scene.

Rescuers eventually retrieved the boy and rushed him to Coast General Hospital, where doctors confirmed that he had died.
