Health CS Mutahi Kagwe on Saturday announced 23 Covid-19 deaths, the highest number of fatalities in a single day since the pandemic struck back in March.

Addressing the press from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), the CS said the total number of fatalities currently stands at 364.

Among the 23 was a 16 year old patient.

“We are increasingly seeing younger people passing away. People should stop socializing and gathering,” the CS said.

Further, Kenya’s virus load shot to 21,363 after 727 persons tested positive for the virus.

The newly detected infections came from a 6,371 sample size.

Of the new cases, 696 are Kenyans while 31 foreigners. In terms of gender, 465 are males and 262 are females.

In the counties, the cases were spread out as follows: Nairobi 470, Kiambu 64, Kajiado 25, Kirinyaga 20, Mombasa 16, Migori 15, Busia 13, Machakos 12 and Laikipia 11.

On a positive note, 254 patients have recovered from the disease pushing the total number of recoveries to 8,419.

88 of the recovered cases were in home-based care while 166 were discharged from various hospitals.

CS Kagwe noted that Kiambu, Kajiado and Machakos counties were already overloaded and were in need of strategic support.

“We took PPEs to Kiambu county yesterday (Friday). Kiambu is in that state and needs national government support due to the number of deaths and cases,” he said.
