Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Thika Branch grand heist that made headlines in the past week was orchestrated by two high scholars and A students from the Nyeri High School.
The brothers; Halford Munene Murakaru (UON- electrical and electronics engineering graduate) and Charles Mwangi Murakaru (JKUAT- agricultural engineering graduate) hail from a small village in Mathira constituency, Nyeri county.
The engineers are said to have dug a 30 meters tunnel into the KCB bank’s strongroom, making away with over Sh50 million in different currencies.
The graduates have been referred to as as ‘inseparable introverts’ by their mother Ester Nyaguthii who narrated how she she struggled to raise the duo and endeavored to give them the best education since they were bright.
“When Mwangi was admitted to Nyeri High I was worried because I did not have the money. I decided to sell our only cow and then borrow from neighbors and friends,” she told the Standard.
“It was a struggle, walking for close to six hours, but my boys were very intelligent and I knew I had to give them the best education possible,” she continued.

The ‘learned suspects’ were arraigned in court on Monday where they denied the charges.
They were apprehended on Saturday in Marurui, Kiambu county. Ms Nyaguthii did however point out that her sons lived in Nairobi and had visited them in the past.
She says that the two are ‘adults and as a mother, I can only do my part and hope they do the right thing.’
Munene, Mwangi and their partner in crime, Julius Ndung’u applied for bails and bonds, an application Justice Murigi will rule on on Wednesday.
