The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has announced plans to recruit 45 new judges to serve in the country’s courts.

According to a gazette notice published on June 4, 2025, Chief Justice Martha Koome said the Judiciary is looking to hire 15 judges for the Court of Appeal, 20 for the High Court, and 10 for the Environment and Land Court.

“Pursuant to Section 30 of the Judicial Service Act and Section 3, Part II of the First Schedule of the Judicial Service Act, 2011, I, Martha Karambu Koome, Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya, for and on behalf of the Judiciary of Kenya, declare vacancies in the Office of Judge of the Court of Appeal of the Republic of Kenya,” the notice reads.

The recruitment process had initially started last year but was put on hold due to budget restrictions following protests against the Finance Bill. At the time, the National Treasury directed the Judiciary to limit its expenditure to just 15 percent of the approved budget.

However, with the availability of more funds, the Judicial Service Commission is now moving ahead with filling these critical positions.
