The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has explained the reason behind the temporary closure of Terminal 1C at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Sunday, July 20, after a fire alarm was triggered.

In a statement issued on Sunday evening, KAA confirmed that the airport’s fire alarm system went off several times in the afternoon, with the first activation occurring at around 2:55pm in the check-in area of Terminal 1C. The incident prompted an immediate response by the airport’s Fire and Rescue team.

Although the situation was initially brought under control, repeated activations of the alarm led airport authorities to shut down the terminal temporarily to allow for further investigation and safety checks.

“As a precautionary measure, Terminal 1C was vacated to ensure the safety of passengers and airline staff,” read part of the KAA statement.

The authority further noted that no flights were disrupted, as all scheduled departures from the terminal were smoothly relocated to Terminals 1A and 1B.

Terminal 1C mainly handles international departures for several regional and foreign airlines. KAA emphasized that normal operations continued in the other terminals and that all safety systems were under review by teams on the ground.

Passengers were advised to check with their respective airlines for any changes in terminal assignments as the assessment continued.
