Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology (ICT), Stephene Isaboke, Thursday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide by accelerating the digitisation of rural areas across the country.
Already, he said said it has funded the roll-out of digital infrastructure in several villages to ensure equitable access to technology and opportunities.
“We are working closely with county governments and the private sector to ensure that every village has access to reliable internet and digital services,” he stated.
“Our goal is to empower all citizens, especially the youth, by bringing technology closer to them.”
Currently, the government is partnering with Huawei Kenya in training youth in villages across the country.
In Kisii, Huawei has sponsored training in Kitutu Chache North and Bobasi constituencies.
The collaboration with Huawei Isaboke said, marks a significant milestone in the national agenda to harness technology for development.
“By providing hands-on training and exposure to global best practices, we are ensuring our youth are not left behind in the digital revolution,” the PS stated.
The digitisation initiative includes establishing community digital hubs, offering digital literacy training, and supporting e-government services in remote areas.
Isaboke was speaking at Bogesaka Primary, Nyamache during the graduation of youth who had been doing an ICT course sponsored by Huawei.
Huawei executive Adam Lane said at least 130 students graduated during the programme.
More than 5000 more are targeted across the country.
He described the training as transformational step toward building a digitally inclusive economy.”
“We are proud to partner with the government to nurture local ICT talent. This is more than just training; it’s about investing in the country’s future digital workforce,” said Lane.
Isaboke said the government’s efforts are part of a broader national digital transformation strategy aimed at fostering innovation, improving service delivery, and stimulating local economies through technology, he stated.
The government has funded about 1500 digital hubs across the country.
At least three have been set up across Kisii already.
Several beneficiaries of past Huawei training initiatives shared testimonials during the graduation noting how the program had opened doors to internships, employment, and even startup funding.
