Safaricom PLC has announced that it will carry out a scheduled system upgrade for its mobile money service, M-PESA, on the night of Monday, September 22, 2025.

In a statement, the company said the upgrade will take place between 12:30 am and 3:30 am, during which all M-PESA services, including airtime purchase, will be unavailable.

Safaricom explained that the maintenance is part of efforts to improve the safety and reliability of its financial products and services.

“The timing of this maintenance activity has been planned to result in minimal inconvenience to our customers,” the company said, while apologizing for any disruptions that may occur.

M-PESA, which has been in operation for 18 years, remains one of Kenya’s most widely used mobile money services.
