    Amanda Jeannette Detmer was born on September 27, 1971, in Chico, California. She is the daughter of Susan, a teacher, and Melvin, a singing cowboy. Detmer pursued higher education at California State University, Chico, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree before continuing to New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. In 1998, she graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree, setting the stage for her professional acting career.

    Film Career

    Detmer made her feature film debut in 1999 in the satirical comedy Drop Dead Gorgeous, where she played Miss Minneapolis. A year later, she gained more attention with her role as Terry Chaney in the hit horror film Final Destination. That same year, she appeared in the romantic comedy Boys and Girls.

    Her breakout period continued in the early 2000s with roles in Saving Silverman (2001) and Frank Darabont’s The Majestic (2001), alongside Jim Carrey. In 2002, Detmer starred in Big Fat Liar and earned her first leading role in the romantic comedy Kiss the Bride. She went on to appear in Lucky 13 (2005), Extreme Dating (2005), and the Owen Wilson comedy You, Me and Dupree (2006).

    Over the years, Detmer continued working steadily in both independent and mainstream projects. She appeared in American Crude (2008), AmericanEast (2008), and later took on roles in The Week (2015) and Pure Country: Pure Heart (2017). Most recently, she played the mother in Netflix’s A California Christmas (2020) and reprised the role in the 2021 sequel City Lights.

She also starred in ABC’s sitcom Man Up! (2011), though the show lasted just one season.
