    Early Life

Roger Penske was born on February 20, 1937, in Shaker Heights, Ohio. His father, Jay Penske, worked as a corporate executive for a metal company and inspired Roger’s early entrepreneurial mindset.

As a teenager, Penske bought used cars, repaired them, and resold them for profit from his family home. After graduating from Shaker Heights High School in 1955, he enrolled at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

    Racing Career Beginnings

Penske first entered competitive racing through hillclimbing events before transitioning to road-course racing in Porsches. He made his professional debut at Marlboro Motor Raceway in Maryland and quickly established himself as a talented driver.

During the early 1960s, Penske competed in Formula One Grands Prix and also captured a NASCAR Pacific Coast Late Model race victory in 1963. Despite his success behind the wheel, he retired from racing in 1965 to focus on business opportunities, including opening his first Chevrolet dealership in Philadelphia.

    Building Team Penske

In 1966, Penske launched his professional racing organization, Team Penske, at the 24 Hours of Daytona. The team rapidly evolved into a dominant force in motorsports.

Team Penske secured its first Indianapolis 500 victory in 1972 with driver Mark Donohue. A year later, the organization earned its first NASCAR win.

Over time, Team Penske expanded into multiple racing disciplines, including the NTT IndyCar Series, NASCAR Cup Series, FIA World Endurance Championship, Formula One, CART, and Australian Supercars. Legendary drivers such as Mario Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi, Bobby Unser, and Helio Castroneves have raced under the Penske banner.

The organization has accumulated more than 500 victories and over 40 championships across different racing series.

    NASCAR and IndyCar Success

Penske’s dominance extended into NASCAR, where his teams captured major titles and prestigious races. In 2012, driver Brad Keselowski delivered Penske’s first NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship.

Penske Racing also claimed victories at the Daytona 500 in 2008, 2015, and 2022. Meanwhile, Penske became the most successful owner in Indianapolis 500 history, recording 18 wins between 1972 and 2019.

In Australia, Penske expanded his empire by purchasing a controlling stake in Dick Johnson Racing in 2014. The team was rebranded as DJR Team Penske and later won the prestigious Bathurst 1000 in 2019.

    Penske Corporation

Beyond racing, Penske built a transportation and automotive empire through Penske Corporation, the company he founded in 1969.

Headquartered in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, the corporation oversees several major businesses, including Penske Automotive Group, Penske Truck Leasing, Penske Logistics, Ilmor Engineering, and Penske Entertainment.

In 2019, Penske Entertainment purchased the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the IndyCar Series, further cementing Roger Penske’s influence over American motorsports.
