    Early Life

B.G. was born Christopher Noel Dorsey on September 3, 1980, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

He grew up in the Freret neighborhood, where he was exposed to street life at a young age. After losing his father when he was 12, B.G. turned to music as an outlet. He began rapping early and quickly gained attention in the local New Orleans scene under the name “Lil Doogie” before later becoming known as B.G. (short for “Baby Gangsta”).

    Cash Money Records Breakthrough

B.G.’s career took off when he met Bryan “Baby” Williams (Birdman), co-founder of Cash Money Records, in the early 1990s.

He was among the first artists signed to the label alongside Lil Wayne, and he initially formed a duo with Wayne known as the B.G.’z.

In 1996, he released his debut album Chopper City, followed by It’s All on U Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 in 1997, helping establish Cash Money as a growing force in Southern rap.

    The Hot Boys Era

In 1997, B.G. joined Hot Boys, alongside:

    • Lil Wayne
    • Juvenile
    • Turk

Their debut album Get It How U Live! (1997) sold hundreds of thousands of copies and built a strong regional following.

The group’s 1999 album Guerrilla Warfare became a breakout success, going platinum and reaching:

    • #1 on the Billboard R&B chart
    • Top 5 on the Billboard 200

This era helped define the sound of New Orleans hip-hop and cemented B.G.’s status as a core member of Cash Money’s golden generation.

    “Bling Bling” and Mainstream Success

In 1999, B.G. released Chopper City in the Ghetto, his most successful solo project.

The album featured the hit single “Bling Bling”, which:

    • Peaked at #36 on the Billboard Hot 100
    • Became a global pop culture phrase
    • Was later added to the Oxford English Dictionary

The term “bling bling” went on to define an entire era of hip-hop fashion and luxury culture.

    Legal Issues

B.G.’s career was heavily impacted by legal troubles.

In 2009, he was arrested after a traffic stop led to the discovery of firearms and drugs in his vehicle. He was later charged with witness tampering and sentenced in 2012 to 14 years in federal prison.

He served approximately 11 years before being released in 2023, followed by time in a halfway house before his full release in 2024.

His incarceration significantly slowed his music career but did not diminish his legacy in hip-hop history.

    Later Life

Following his release, B.G. returned to public attention and was welcomed back into the hip-hop community by former Cash Money associates, including Birdman.

Although he has not replicated the commercial success of his early career, B.G. remains a key figure in the history of Southern rap. His work with the Hot Boys and his solo success helped lay the foundation for New Orleans’ dominance in late-1990s hip-hop.
